Working on finding a sustainable solution, focusing on the future together with her client. This is the way Carlijn van der Vegt-Boshouwers likes to advise and inform you in family law matters, such as maintenance, care arrange-ments, divisions and the settlement of prenuptial agreements, but you can also turn to her for international family law issues. She looks after the interests of expats both in and outside the Netherlands. Carlijn also works as a divorce mediator.
My challenge in the often emotionally charged family law practice is to provide support where needed, but also to give guidance when the client is at a loss for a while. It is nice to experience that clients indicate they can actually continue with their lives after our contact, even if that life is different than it used to be. If it is not possible to reach an amicable agreement, I submit the case to the court. However, even then I focus on being reasonable and keep an eye on the human dimension. After all, a client wants a solution and not a bigger problem.
As a lawyer, I represent one person's interests. However, as a vFAS divorce mediator, partners can turn to me together. As a divorce mediator I guide both partners to an agreement and finalize the divorce as well.
I believe that not only the legal work is important, but also maintaining good contact with other lawyers. That is why I am an active member of the association of Family Lawyers and Divorce Mediators (vFAS). I also teach family law to other lawyers, for example about maintenance issues. This way I keep others sharp and up to date ánd myself.
In addition, I am regularly engaged as a deputy judge. A very useful and valuable addition to my work as a lawyer. At "the other side of the table," one realizes that there is more than one side to a story. Parties rely on your skills, commitment and profes-sionalism.
Entrepreneurship also gives me absolute satisfaction. As a partner you are responsible for the big picture in your office and together with colleagues for performing legal work at a high level. The combination of legal work with seeking new opportunities to help clients even better, ensure that I always enjoy going to work.
